Sound Healing--Just What the Doctor Ordered

Image
Long before Don Campbell published his acclaimed book, The Mozart Effect in 1997, sound healing tools and music therapy entered the realm of conventional medicine. In fact, music therapy as we know it today began in the late 18th century and in the US, developed during the 20th century, starting with a discovery that occurred with musicians entertaining wounded soldiers... While many of us probably have conventional or alternative doctors who haven't embraced sound and music therapies yet, we also know family members, friends, or colleagues who have experienced sound healing or music therapy in the form of adjunct to massage and energy healing or while staying in a hospital and experiencing the healing effects of a trained bedside musician. Some of you have probably used music or seen it used with hospice care as the music prepares the patient to crossover to the other side, peacefully. And yet, I was surprised during a visit to my local library where I came across an entire ...

The Practice--Hiring Sound Healers & Psychoacoustic Experts

Image
I spend a lot of time at Hay House Radio and listening to free spiritual webinars, usually in the realm of energy healing and intuitive coaching.  Often, the spiritual teachers and coaches provide guided meditations or other mp3 programs that lack sound consciousness.  While I understand that production costs of online videos, online courses and mp3 affirmation or meditation giveaways could hinder bottom line profits, cutting corners on soundtracks or background music actually deters from the healing potential of the programs. Oddly, many of the spiritual teachers refer to Dr. Masaru Emoto's work with music and water crystals.  Yet, they don't apply the power of sound to their own projects.  It's as if hiring a musician, psychoacoustic expert or sound healer costs too much.  And the irony of this reflects on music treated as a cheap commodity and that it's not worth giving a musician a paying gig.  So the spiritual teachers deliver their powerful messag...

The Practice--Vibration in Words and Music

Wikipedia Anyone who has been involved with new age practices with a focus on the Law of Attraction already knows about the power of words.  But do you know about the power of words playing in the background such as with songs that play in the stores you shop or on your favorite radio station or during those trips to YouTube? While we lacked awareness about the power of words in former decades such as the 1950 through 1980s, we can no longer claim that ignorance.  We have witnessed and experienced how the words of popular songs have affected our lives collectively.  Words that transformed into twisted mantras backed by programmed drum beats and loud guitars that blasted through our chakras bringing us unease and imbalance. I listen to a lot of songs from various genres during my visits to YouTube.  Often times, I find myself wanting to understand why a certain song plays on the repeat mode in my brain when I haven't heard that song in years.  I ask mysel...

Essay: Music to My Ears Whereever I Am

Image
Others have brought to their stressful life situations to my attention recently. Since I’m going through my own transitional period, I feel more sensitive than usual to other people’s emotional needs, especially the need for comfort. I recommend listening to music in whatever way possible. At the moment I’m limited to 10 CDs while the others (another 588 CDs) are safely stored at a friend’s house along with my guitar. But I keep thinking of the desert island scenario and what CDs I would take along with me knowing full-well that the island would not provide electricity for me to play these CDs and the battery on my computer only lasts 2-hours. Then there are other scenarios that could play out such as complete blackouts of electricity in areas where disasters have struck. Expect the unexpected is my motto these days, but what about adding music preparedness to the kit? Obviously there are situations where we won’t have access to our CDs, but we might still have access to music...
